	OVERVIEW:
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 


 

 &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; Arranging by chance is a collaborative exhibition that builds on the artists’ research
into family trees, queerness, toxicity and healing. It considers the family tree as a
symbolic and botanical form, positioning it in relation to ‘pharmakon’—the idea that a
poison is also a remedy.


&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 

For this exhibition the artists have engaged with three key sites: a decommissioned Nufarm Factory in Fawkner, a childhood property and ex-banana plantation in Northern NSW, and the AIDS Memorial Garden outside the old Infectious Diseases Hospital in Fairfield. These sites of toxicity, death and contamination are places the artists’ are compelled to write, care and make from. As queer parents, they share a commitment to interrogating the linear structures of genealogy and taxonomy, as well as the impacts of industry on various ecologies.


 

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Arranging by chance incorporates new and existing works by Kotlarczyk and Galligan, spanning drawing, installation, photography, audio and written texts.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Garden Variety Dykes is a sculptural group show expanding on the sapphic gardening publication of the same name, edited by Irene Reti and Valerie Jean Chase in 1994.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Garden Variety Dykes is a sculptural group show expanding on the sapphic gardening publication of the same name, edited by Irene Reti and Valerie Jean Chase in 1994.
 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The works reference the heartfelt publication, deep diving into queer ecologies to explore diverse sapphic longing in the garden.

	OVERVIEW:
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 


 

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; anti-aria for ater- is the final instalment in a three-part series of exhibition reading rooms centred around genealogy, familial history, material and elemental kinships, and queer modes of reading and resistance.
 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; This work&#38;nbsp;draws from, while also representing an operatic break with, the paternal line of its previous two iterations: A sonourous draft; a lexicon of windjamming &#38;amp; To touch or strike a fondant ground. This concluding iteration centres feminist and autofictive psychogeographies of fire as they intersect with the history and architecture of the gallery’s incinerator, known colloquially as ‘The Destructor’.
 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
The exhibition gathers around an etymological family, comprising the root word ‘ater’ meaning ‘fire’ (blackened by); ‘aria’ meaning ‘air’ and ‘song’ (typically a melody for a single voice); and the adjacent ‘atrium’: the main room of a house; the room which contains the hearth, from where the smoke of the hearth escapes.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
 

The exhibition is an anti-proposition for solo expression, favouring expanded configurations of familial relations, material kinships and gendered experience, while attuning to the pyrotechnical tensions implicit in passages of extinction and extermination, rebirth and rejuvenation.



&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Envisioned as an expanded publication, this three-chapter ‘book’ cycles back to its beginning to round out with a coda, reflecting the adjacencies of water to fire in the afterlives of the artist’s grandparents and the site of the gallery itself.
&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 

The exhibition consists of a series of nine new works on paper alongside a limited edition risograph publication of new poetry and autofiction, printed by Stray Pages.

	ARTIST STATEMENT:



“A word is a shovel with wings”
—Cecilia Vicuña
“I am too tough for the pressure of the Taliban to destroy me”

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Too Tough {pal abra} has been made in response to the close kinship of womens’ artistic struggle that exists across generations, political circumstances and time and place. The work responds to the simple words “too tough”, spoken by Khadija as part of her daily mantra of survival in the months after the Taliban took violent control of Kabul in August 2021. These words have been conceived of visually, in the style and function of what Chilean artist and activist Cecilia Vicuña calls her ‘palabrarmas’ (‘wordweapons’ or ‘wordarms’) with ‘pala’ being Spanish for ‘shovel’. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
The script of both English and Dari translations have been arranged to echo Vicuna’s collage work pal abra of 1976, made against the backdrop of Chile’s military dictatorship. The visual motif of the shovel is shown with wing-like hands extending from its shaft, offering up the fruits of this mantra. On the cover are the words resist/resist/exist—a kind of self perpetuating logic in the form of a punctured (punctuated) concrete poem.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
 While the earth impregnated papers of the artist book extend a recent and ongoing material practice, it also speaks to the shovel’s connecting with the raw material of the earth—a common substrate of human and more-than-human articulations.
